In its heyday, Thetford could boast being the Saxon capital of East Anglia, and in the 10th century a town worthy of its own mint, whose coins have been found as far afield as Scandinavia.
Thetford’s fortunes changed with the centuries and when King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries, the town’s important religious buildings were destroyed, taking with them much of the town’s wealth and prestige.
Thetford has experienced turbulent times and now has many a fine tale to tell. |
